Set during the infamous bombing of Guernica, Spain in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, the story is told through the perspective of a shy 12-year old girl. Everything changes when she meets a brash 14-year old boy who is involved with the underground. When the bombs rain down and destroy the entire village, the two decide that they will fight back in their own unique way. Gonzalez’s debut novel was the much acclaimed The Red Umbrella.
