Author(s) and Guest(s)
Elizabeth Alexander
Long before Elizabeth Alexander wrote and delivered President Barack Obama’s inaugural poem “Praise Song for the Day,” she was an award-wining poet, essayist and scholar. Her verse, rhythmic and emotionally nuanced, “explores such issues as sex, race, history and family ties,” as Jeffrey Trachtenberg noted in The Wall Street Journal . She is the author of five poetry collections, most recently American Sublime (2005), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. A young adult poetry collection, Miss Crandall’s School for Young Misses and Little Misses of Color (written with Marilyn Nelson) won the 2008 Connecticut Book Award. She is a professor of African American Studies at Yale University. Graywolf Press has published "Praise Song for the Day" as a small book in English and Spanish.
