Malin Alegria

Malin Alegria’s new young adult series set in fiction Dos Rios, Texas is Border Town, in which high school sophomore Fabiola Garza’s must navigate generational, political, and physical borders.  In the third book of the series, Falling Too Fast (Point/Scholastic, $5.99), Fabiola’s dreams of escaping Dos Rios and achieving big-time stardom run up against the swoon-worth singer of a rival band. Alegria is the author of Estrella’s Quinceañera and Sofi Mendoza’s Guide to Getting Lost in Mexico.

Jessica Martinez

In Jessica Martinez’s young adult novel, The Space Between Us (Simon Pulse, $16.99), Amelia is used to being upstaged by her charismatic younger sister, Charly. She doesn’t mind that it always falls to her to cover for Charly’s crazy, impulsive antics. But one night, Charly’s thoughtlessness goes way too far, and she lands both sisters in serious trouble. Martinez is the author of the young adult novel Virtuosity.

Thane Rosenbaum

The Stranger Within Sarah Stein (Texas Tech University Press, $19.95) by Thane Rosenbaum presents a modern-day Alice in Wonderland in which a young girl from a broken home discovers a magic portal under the Brooklyn Bridge that teaches her about the Holocaust and 9/11. In spite of the subject matter, the story manages to maintain what the Los Angeles Times terms, “. . . a bright fairy-tale aspect, a kind of ‘Willy Wonka’ meets ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.”  Rosenbaum is the author of the novels The Golems of Gotham, Second Hand Smoke, and Elijah Visible
