Tom Austin is a 2015 South Florida Knight Arts Challenge finalist for “Beyond Basel: The zine History of South Beach.” “Beyond Basel” is a cultural history examining South Beach’s cultural depth over the last one hundred years, incorporating music, dance, fashion, visual art, film, literature, culinary history, and nightlife.

Currently, Tom Austin is a contributing arts writer for the Miami Herald, focusing on the visual arts; since 2004, he’s been a contributor to Travel + Leisure.  From 1991 to 1996, he was a staff writer at Miami New Times, writing feature stories and a weekly nightlife column – Swelter — about South Beach. Between 1996 and 2004, he was the Features Editor for Ocean Drive, and also wrote the nightlife column Babylon. He’s also been published in the New York Times, Art & Auction, Art & Antiques, Art News, Interior Design, the Washington Post, W, Interview, Paper, The London Sunday Times Magazine, Vogue, Men’s Journal, Town & Country, the Miami Rail, and the Columbia Journalism Review. He is also the author of a guidebook to Miami, published by Alfred A. Knopf, and The Surf Club, published by Assouline.
