Únete a nosotros en Speak Up, talleres de escritura creativa para después de la escuela, impartidos por artistas de enseñanza experimentados y reconocidos a nivel nacional en el Koubek Center del MDC los lunes de 4 a 7 p.m. El enfoque de estos talleres es cultivar el proceso de escritura creativa en spoken word y poesía de performance, desde el borrador hasta la presentación, la publicación y las competencias de slam, para empoderar a los participantes, equiparlos para el éxito y construir una comunidad literaria duradera en el sur de Florida.

Aja Monet is a Caribbean American poet. Her poems are wise, lyrical, and courageous. Monet won the legendary Nuyorican Poet’s Café Grand Slam title and has been internationally recognized for combining her spellbound voice and vivid poetic imagery on stage. In 2018, Monet’s first full collection of poetry, Mi madre fue una luchadora por la libertad, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. She was a featured speaker at TEDWomen 2018 for her meaningful work in South Florida with Smoke Signals Studio.

There are many untold stories we carry. Each story shapes who we are and how we imagine the world around us. Poetry is the practice of truth-telling. In this workshop, join Aja Monet in exercises and writing prompts that will awaken our ability to tell the truth about the stories that have silenced us. The choice to write a poem in response to the times we are living in is a political choice, an action, and a contribution to the collective narrative. Language and how we use it is liberating. Cecily Schuler es una escritora y artista de spoken word *genderqueer*, criada y radicada en el sur de Florida. Su obra aparece en Jai Alai Magazine, Winter Tangerine, the Offing, great weather for MEDIA y otros lugares. Cecily obtuvo su Maestría en Escritura en el Pratt Institute en Brooklyn, NY, y participó en residencias en Breadloaf Writers’ Conference, The Home School: Miami y Vermont Studio Center. Es la Campeona Individual de Vox Pop Slam 2016, ha representado y entrenado equipos en Seattle y la ciudad de Nueva York, y es la ganadora del Slam online inaugural del Mes Nacional de la Poesía (2018). Becaria de Brooklyn Poets en 2017, Cecily está trabajando actualmente en una memoria poética experimental de larga duración.
