Six-year-old MANUEL DIAZ and his mother first arrived at Miami’s airport in 1961 from Cuba with little more than a dime for a phone call to their relatives in their newly adopted city’s Little Havana neighborhood. Forty years later, Diaz, by then an attorney, became mayor of the City of Miami, his first elected office. He was elected to a second term in 2005, and was chosen president of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2008. While in office Diaz developed a vision for Miami as an international city that embodies diversity, economic opportunity, effective customer service, and a great quality of life. Recognized for implementing innovative programs in the areas of urban design, sustainability and green initiatives, education, infrastructure investment, affordable housing, law enforcement, poverty and homelessness, and arts and culture, Diaz’s efforts resulted in nearly 100 awards and commendations. A senior partner at Lydecker Diaz, n/k/a as Lydecker Law, he served as a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and is the author of Miami Transformed: Rebuilding America One Neighborhood, One City at a Time (University of Pennsylvania Press).

ELIZABETH PLATER-ZYBERK is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FIAA) and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP). She is the Malcolm Matheson Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Director of the Master of Urban Design Program at the University of Miami. She also possesses a joint appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Miller School of Medicine, and was dean of UM’s School of Architecture 1995-2013. She teaches courses on urban design and built environment adaptation to climate change, and is recognized as a leader of the New Urbanism movement, promoting walkable resilient urban design. A co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism in 1992, her teaching, research, and consulting professional practice has ranged across new community design, community rebuilding, regional plans, and zoning codes. A number of innovations in professional practice, such as the traditional neighborhood design zoning code (TND), were initiated with students in School of Architecture design studios under her guidance and first implemented through community outreach in South Florida.

VICTOR DOVER, a fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP), is co-founder of Dover, Kohl & Partners Town Planning based in Coral Gables, Florida, a design practice focused on restoring healthy neighborhoods as the basis for sound communities and regions. He is a former national chair of the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) and lead designer of more than 150 neighborhoods, urban revitalization programs, and regional plans across the United States and abroad.
