Vanessa Riley’s Reina de la Isla: Una Novela is based on the incredible true-life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a free woman of color who rose from slavery – she bought her freedom and that of her sister and her mother from her Irish planter father – to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies. Jayne Allen’s debut fiction work, Black Girls Must Die Exhausted: A Novel, is the first installment in a three-book series about modern womanhood. The protagonist, Tabitha Walker, is a Black woman with a plan to “have it all.” But with her checklist seemingly set, an unexpected diagnosis brings her picture-perfect life crashing down.
