Some people believe that a poem comes from some magical place, the unconscious, the muse, the ether. Other people believe that a poem comes from the writer’s intention. Still other people fall somewhere in between. In this workshop, we’ll explore both the mysterious magical place where poetry might come from and learn about craft—the writer’s intention. Each day will be devoted to reading your poems, as well as workshopping each others’ poems. Bring a notebook and/or laptop, your imagination, and an open mind, and hopefully you will leave with new poems, new inspiration, new friends, and ideas for future poems.

Viktoria Chang’s poetry books include OBIT, Barbie Chang, The Boss, Salvinia Molesta, epi Circle. OBIT was named a NYT Notable Book and a Tan best book of the year. It was longlisted for a National Book Award and is currently a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the LA Times Book Award, and the PEN Voelcker Award. Her children’s picture book, Is Mommy?, was illustrated by Marla Frazee and published by Beach Lane Books/Simon & Schuster. It was named a New York Times Notable Book. Her middle grade novel, Love, Love was published by Sterling Publishing. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Sustainable Arts Foundation Fellowship, the Poetry Society of America’s Alice Fay Di Castagnola Award, a Pushcart Prize, a Lannan Residency Fellowship, and a Katherine Min MacDowell Colony Fellowship. She lives in Los Angeles and is the Program Chair of Antioch’s Low-Residency MFA Program.
