Actor Tony Shalhoub’s debut book, We Thought They’d Never Leave: Musings on Food and Family, co-written with his daughter, writer and producer Josie Adams, is a heartfelt memoir about food, family, recipes, and the stories passed down around the table. At its center is the annual Shalhoub summer reunion in Door County, Wisconsin – a tradition that pulls 10 siblings, their children, and their children’s children back to the same stretch of land, carrying decades of shared history with them. We Thought They’d Never Leave is an invitation to join the Shalhoubs’ table, where everyone has an opinion, everyone is expected to pitch in, and there’s always room for one more.

TONY SHALHOUB is an Emmy-, Tony-, and Golden Globe–winning actor whose career spans film, television, and theater. He is best known for his roles in Monk, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, y Wings, and has appeared in dozens of acclaimed films and television projects. On Broadway, he has performed in The Band’s Visit, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, as well as Conversations with My Father, Golden Boy, y Act One. He has also received multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards, among numerous other honors recognizing his work on stage and screen. We Thought They’d Never Leave: Musings on Food and Family (Gallery Books), written with his daughter, writer and producer Josie Adams, reflects on growing up as one of 10 children in a lively Lebanese American household in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and preserving a reunion that has become a beloved family institution. It is his debut book.

JOSIE ADAMS is a writer, producer, and the founder of House of Water, an independent, women-led production company focused on writing and development across film, TV, books, audio, and theater. With her father, actor Tony Shalhoub, she co-wrote a culinary narrative memoir titled We Thought They’d Never Leave: Musings on Food & Family (Gallery Books), and alongside her father appeared in two episodes of the CNN Originals culinary travel series Breaking Bread (“Marseille” and “Wisconsin”). Her writing has appeared in McSweeney’s y Buen provecho, and she is a prolific “sleep story” writer for Audible, where her titles have thousands of starred reviews. She was adopted at birth in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Los Angeles. She has attended the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and the Yale Writers’ Conference, and holds a BFA in theater from CalArts, along with multiple culinary degrees. For the past decade, she has worked as a copywriter across tech, e-commerce, and publishing.
