A professor of human rights and journalism at Bard College, IAN BURUMA was born in The Netherlands and studied sinology at Leiden University and cinema at Nihon University College of Art in Tokyo. He has been an editor at the Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong, The Spectator in London, and chief editor of The New York Review of Books, and has written for papers and periodicals all over the world. Buruma was a fellow at St. Antony’s College at the University of Oxford and the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. His many accolades include the Erasmus Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His books include Murder in Amsterdam: The Death of Theo van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerance, Year Zero: A History of 1945, A Tokyo Romance: A Memoir, and Stay Alive: Berlin, 1939-1945 (Penguin Press). He has also made documentary films for the BBC.
