PAULA MCLAIN, author of the GMA Book Club pick Skylark: A Novel (Atria Books), is a New York Times bestselling author whose previous titles include the novels The Paris Wife, Circling the Sun, Love and Ruin, and When the Stars Go Dark, as well as two collections of poetry the memoir Like Family: Growing Up in Other People’s Houses. Abandoned by both parents, she and her two sisters became wards of the California Court System, moving in and out of various foster homes for the next 14 years. After aging out of the system, McLain supported herself by working as a nurse’s aide, a pizza delivery girl, an auto-plant worker, and a cocktail waitress – before discovering she could, and wanted to, write.
