SCHEREZADE GARCÍA is a Dominican-born, New York-based visual artist renowned for her vibrant explorations of history, migration, collective memory, and cultural colonization. Through her painting, printmaking, and installation art, García weaves together narratives of displacement and hybridity, often depicting dark-skinned female figures surrounded by symbolic elements like water and ornamental motifs. Her art addresses the legacy of the African diaspora, the Caribbean’s colonial past, and the complexities of mestizo culture. She holds an A.A.S. from Altos de Chavón School of Design, a BFA from Parsons School of Design, and an MFA from City College of New York. She co-founded the Dominican York Proyecto GRÁFICA and has exhibited widely, with works in prominent collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and El Museo del Barrio. García has received numerous accolades, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and the Colene Brown Art Prize. She is a professor at The University of Texas at Austin and continues to contribute to cultural dialogues through her dynamic and politically charged art.
