If the past is a foreign country, what is heritage but an afterlife we cannot access yet carry with us wherever we go? In The Man in 119 by Kazim Ali, the poet grapples with the loss of his mother to explore how both the body and soul migrate through the natural world during grief. To write Behold, Shara McCallum traveled to museums across the globe to view the work of Black, Caribbean, and women artists, asking what it means to step into the scene, view the histories of the self, and finally connect. Written after her husband’s cancer diagnosis, black frag/ments by Lolita Stewart-White is a haunting lyrical collection on the traumas Black Americans are asked to endure in a racist medical system, and the ways Black Americans protest, repair, and revive that span generations.
