1 / 8Caribbean writers move across genres, creating stories rooted in island communities as well as worlds that reach far beyond them. Marlon James’ The Disappearers brings violence, queer identity, survival, and belonging into a conversation that also draws on his work in fantasy. With Queen of the Night Sky and Rebel Heiress, Amalie Howard extends the discussion into fantasy, romance, and historical fiction, exploring how desire and ambition can challenge the rules of a story’s world. Tiphanie Yanique discusses Virgin Islands Noir, co-edited with Richard Georges, an anthology whose stories reveal the secrets and tensions beneath familiar images of the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. The authors will consider how place informs their work, what different genres allow them to imagine, and how they navigate expectations about the stories Caribbean writers should tell. Moderated by journalist and novelist Ryan Bachoo, author of An Unending Search.
